REFERENCE 160S

Audio Research is pleased to introduce the Reference 160S stereo power amplifier. Featuring a vacuum tube design, it follows in the footsteps of the internationally acclaimed 160M monaural power amplifier launched in 2018, which has won numerous amplifier of the year awards from publications such as Stereophile and Hi-Fi+.

Reference 160S (REF160S) inherits the stunning appearance of the 160M, with dual GhostMeters™ floating in front of eight KT150 output power transistors.

160S continues the feature set introduced in the 160M, including proprietary automatic biasing circuitry, switchable transistor or super-linear operating modes, balanced and single-ended inputs, and output transistor monitoring modes. The 160S also employs a four-layer circuit board, allowing music to emanate from a dark background.

It weighs 100 pounds. The chassis depth is 21.5 inches (54.6 cm), and two rear handles have been added for easy lifting and moving. A large 120 mm slim fan is horizontally built into the bottom cover for ventilation

Power output

140 watts continuously from 20Hz to 20kHz. Total harmonic distortion at 1kHz is typically 1% at 140 watts and less than 0.04% at 1 watt. (Note that actual power output depends on line voltage and “conditions”, i.e., maximum power will be adversely affected if the power line has high distortion, although this is not important from a listening perspective).

Power bandwidth

(-3dB point) 5Hz to 70kHz.

Frequency response

(1 watt-hour is the -3 dB point) 0.5 Hz to 110 kHz.

Founded by William Z. Johnson, who began designing bespoke audio electronics in the early 1950s and operated a specialist audio retail shop in the mid-1960s. Johnson's endeavours almost single-handedly revived vacuum tube design at a time when major industry manufacturers had abandoned the technology in favour of low-cost solid-state equipment, whose inferiority in musical fidelity is now widely acknowledged.
