AN-S1 is a passive device designed to convert the primary current output of a moving-coil (MC) cartridge into a higher-voltage, low-current signal of sufficient strength for a moving-magnet (MM) phono stage to amplify it to an appropriate level.
The internal transformer used in AN-S1 is manufactured exclusively by Audio Note (UK), utilizing premium core materials and winding techniques, and is housed in a Mu-metal shielding can to minimize noise and interference.
AN-S1 is available in two versions: AN-S1/L (low impedance) and AN-S1/H (high impedance).
The “L” version features switchable input impedances of 3 ohms and 12 ohms. The “H” version: 15 ohms and 60 ohms.
The 3-ohm input on the “L” version is primarily intended for use with Audio Note IO moving-coil cartridges, while the 12-ohm input is designed for cartridges with an internal impedance of approximately 3–4 ohms.
The 15-ohm input on the “H” version is designed for use with cartridges having an internal impedance of approximately 4 to 5 ohms; the 60-ohm input is specifically designed for cartridges with an internal impedance in the 15 to 20-ohm range.
You can use our transformer with cartridges that have higher internal impedance or values exceeding the switchable input ranges; however, it is important to note that, generally, the best performance is achieved when the input impedance is three to four times the cartridge’s internal impedance.
