I-20’s single-ended integrated design features high plate voltage, high plate acceleration voltage, low electron cloud density, and low cathode current, resulting in an 80% improvement in power output efficiency compared to traditional Class A transistors. This design allows for speed modulation of the signal amplitude, rather than relying solely on addition and subtraction of a constant current signal as in standard Class A amplification. This architecture also improves sensitivity and reduces drive current requirements; a single EL34 tube can output up to 20 watts of power, with the 12AX7 amplification stage requiring less than 1 mA of drive current, and the EL34 anode requiring only 35 mA of drive current when 650 volts are applied.
