Reference 80S stereo amplifier continues Audio Research’s latest design achievements in creating vacuum tube amplifiers, redefining the ultimate music reproduction and featuring incredibly beautiful packaging.<\/p>\n
80S is designed for music lovers who don’t require the output power of its larger siblings (the Reference 160S stereo and 160M mono amplifiers). The 80S continues the design philosophy, including dual GhostMeters\u00ae floating in front of four KT150 output tubes. The extruded panel is an important part of the all-aluminum chassis, combining robustness with aesthetics.<\/p>\n
In terms of appearance, the 80S is the same size as the 160M. A shallow whisper fan is built into the baseplate. Flexibility is also built in, including XLR and SE inputs, 4-8-16 ohm output taps, 12V input and output triggers, RS232 input, tube timer, switchable fan speed, and a disableable auto-shutdown function.<\/p>\n
This feature set is identical to the 160S, including a proprietary automatic bias circuit that adjusts not only based on tube life but also on power line voltage fluctuations. It features output tube fuses, flexibility with single-ended and balanced inputs, switchable triode-pentode operation to suit different speakers and personal preferences, output tube monitoring, and an included hour meter so you know how many hours have passed on the tubes\u2014like an odometer for your amplifier. This is a tube amplifier that requires no fiddling; it’s meant to be enjoyed. When connected to a modern preamplifier with a 12V trigger, the built-in 12V trigger turns the 80S on or off.<\/p>\n
Like all previous reference amplifiers, the 80S employs a fully balanced differential design, offering the highest performance and lowest distortion. A four-layer circuit board provides independent ground planes, better circuit layout, and fewer noise-causing point-to-point connections. Music plays against a quiet, dark background, like stargazing in the countryside far from light pollution. It is magical and all-encompassing.<\/p>\n
